Reserve Power

Welsh Power is the UK’s leading independent provider of reserve power asset management services.
We have operated in the flexibility space since acquiring an operational OCGT in 2008 and were the first to develop an EIS funded flexible plant. We have been instrumental in the development of the long-term STOR service and participated in the Capacity Market since its inception.
Welsh Power has developed and now operates over 550MW gas powered generation across 36 separate sites across England and Wales.
These generation sites play a key role in helping to balance demand and supply of electricity. As the GB electricity system transitions to a low carbon energy system Welsh Power’s portfolio of flexible and dispatchable plant are able to fill in the dips in generation when weather conditions limit renewable output. Traditional gas and coal fired power stations need significant notice to start generating electricity and have long minimum run times so are largely unsuitable to operating in parallel with variable renewable energy. In contrast our portfolio of assets can start generating in as little as five minutes and are equally comfortable running for 20 minutes, 20 hours or 20 days making them the perfect complement to the variable nature of renewable energy.
We have significant experience of operating assets on behalf of financial institutions, including assets developed by our in-house development team as well as assets developed by others.
